Aytmatov’a göre “kader,” belirleyici ve düzenleyici tek kuvvettir. Onun işleyişprensibi kimse tarafından çözülemez ancak akıl yoluyla belli ölçülerde takip edilebilir. Bu takip insanın sınırlı iradesiyle mümkündür. Tüm canlıların, sınırlanmış karar verme yetileriyle yazgısına yön verirken dikkat etmesi gereken önemli bir nokta vardır, o da kendi kaderlerinin başka kaderleri de etkileyebileceği gerçeğidir. Bu durumda yazar, tüm kaderlerin birbirine bağlı olduğunu anlatmak istemiştir. Canlılar, bulundukları zamanın şartlarına alışmak zorundadırlar. Bu durum da kaderin kabullenişini doğurur. Aytmatov, kaderini kabullenmeyenleri de eserinde eleştirmiştir
