Çeviri eylemi kendi içerisinde birçok değişkene sahip olsa da, “zaman” kavramı bu değişkenler arasında kaynak metnin ve hedef metnin kaleme alındığı dönemlerin temsil dili bakımından ön plana çıkmaktadır. Bu yüzden kaynak metnin tarihin hangi döneminde yazıldığı kadar, çeviri metin olan hedef metnin ne zaman basıldığı da önemlidir. Özellikle zaman dilimi olarak arasında büyük farklar bulunan metinlerde, çevirmen çeviri sürecinin gerektirdiği tarihsel ve güncel özellikleri hedef metne yansıtabilmek için geçmiş (eserin yazıldığı dönem) ve şimdi (eserin çevrildiği dönem) olmak üzere tarihin iki noktasında adeta mekik dokumaktadır. Çevirmen bunu yaparken kaynak metnin yazıldığı döneme yönelirse tarihselleştirme ve kaynak metnin çevrildiği modern zamana yönelirse modernleştirme şeklinde iki yönteme başvurmaktadır. Dolayısıyla bu çalışma Popoviç, Holmes ve Nida’nın doğrudan ya da dolaylı olarak önerdiği bu iki yöntemin uygulamalı olarak daha iyi anlaşılmasını ve özellikle kaynak ve hedef metninin arasında zamansal olarak büyük fark olan bir eser çerçevesinde bu iki yöntemin incelenmesini amaçlamaktadır. Bu bağlamda Balzac’ın 19. yüzyılın ilk yarısındaki Fransız devlet yönetimini ve bürokrasisini ele aldığı bir deneme eser olan ve ilk olarak 1841’de yayımlanan Physiologie de l’Émployé’nin yaklaşık 180 yıl sonra Çalışanın Fizyolojisi olarak Türkçeye çevirisi bu çalışmanın örneklemi olarak seçilmiştir. Çeviride zamandan kaynaklı farklılıkları gidermek için çevirmene çeviri sürecinde yardımcı olan bu iki yöntemin böylesine bir zaman farkına sahip iki metin çerçevesinde incelemenin çeviri pratiği anlamında hem çevirmenlere hem de çevirmen adaylarına katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir.
Although the act of translation has many variables in itself, the concept of "time" stands out among these variables in terms of the representation language of the periods that the source text and the target text were written. Therefore, the period that the target text (the translated text) was printed is important as well as the period in which the source text was written. Especially in texts with great differences in terms of time, the translator literally shifts at two points in history as the past (the period that the work was written) and the present (the period that the work was translated) in order to reflect the historical and current features required by the translation process to the target text. By doing this, he uses two methods: the historicization if the translator turns to the period in which the source text was written and the modernization if he turns to the modern time in which the source text was translated. Therefore, this study aims to better understand these two methods directly or indirectly proposed by Popoviç, Holmes and Nida, and to examine these two methods, especially within the framework of a work that has a great temporal difference between the source and target text. In this context, the translation of Physiologie de l'Émployé into Turkish as Çalışanın Fizyolojisi, which was an essay in which Balzac dealt with the French state administration and bureaucracy in the first half of the 19th century and which was first published in 1841, was chosen as the sample of this study. It is thought that these two methods, which help the translator in the translation process in order to eliminate time-based differences in translation, will contribute to both translators and translator candidates in terms of translation practice within the framework of two texts with such a time difference.
