Malatya iline bağlı Arapgir ilçesi coğrafi olarak dağlık, engebeli arazi yapısındadır. Geçmiş, dokuma merkezî özelliğinin yanı sıra tarihî ticari yol üzerinde yer almaktaydı. Bu yönüyle geleneksel zanaatların gelişimine katkıda bulunmaktaydı. Bu zanaatlardan palan yapımı XX. yüzyılın ikinci yarısına kadar beş dükkânı 15 esnafı ile önemini korumaktaydı. Arapgir’deki palan; at, katır ve merkep için yapılırdı. Ulaşımın hayvanlar vasıtasıyla yapılması, bu zanaatı revaçta meslekler arasında yerini sağlamlaştırmaktaydı. Motorlu taşıtların yaygınlaşmasıyla beraber hayvan gücüne duyulan bağlılık azaldı. İlçede yeni teknolojik gelişmeler tamamen olmasa bile kullanıma başlayınca geleneksel meslekler yavaş yavaş önemini kaybetmeye ve iş bulamamaya başladı. Diğer geleneksel meslekler gibi palan yapımı da gelişme karşısında tutunamadı. Geçmişte aranılan meslek vasfını kaybetti. Coğrafi şartlar ve ekonomik gerekçelerle hayvan gücünden yararlananların varlığı bir nebze olsa da günümüze kadar bu mesleğin sürdürülmesinde etkilidir. Arapgir’de mesleği yürüten esnafın sayısının azalması karşısında var olan ustanın yerini alabilecek kimse de bulunmamaktadır. Bu durumda hayvan ile nakil yolunu tercih edenleri dışarıya yöneltecektir. Bulunmadığından hayvanlar üzerine farklı örtüler konularak taşımaya gidilecektir. Uygun olmayan örtülerin kullanılması da hayvanlara zarar verilecektir. Mesleğin devamı için ustalarının ekonomik kaygılarının giderilmesi gerekmektedir. Zanaatı devam ettirecek esnafın yetiştirilmesi belde sakinlerinin duyarlı olmasına bağlıdır. Kamu işbirliğiyle çözüm yolları arayışında olmak, muhtemel zanaatı yaşatmaya devam edecektir. Yaylalarda göçer yaşamın varlığı, mesleğin devamı açısından önem taşımaktadır. Maddi kültürün yaşatılması gelecek nesiller için birer değer olacaktır.

The presence of immigrant life in the fields is of importance in terms of the continuation of the profession. Living the material culture will be a value for the future generations.

In this case, it will direct those who prefer the way of transport with the animal to the outside. Since it is not found, different covers will be placed on the animals and transport will be carried. The use of inappropriate coverings will also harm the animals. In order to continue the profession, the economic concerns of its masters must be addressed. The cultivation of artisans who will continue the craft depends on the sensitivity of the residents of the town. Seeking solutions in cooperation with the public will continue to perpetuate the possible craft. The existence of nomadic life in the Highlands is important for the continuation of the profession. Sustaining material culture will be a value for future generations.
