The production of green tomatoes can result in significant loss of productivity due to foreign herbs. This study was conducted between 2007-2008 in two different tomato greenhouses in Adana, Turkey, with the aim of determining the effects of solarization application on foreign herbs and tomato production. Both greenhouses in which the study was carried out were solarized for 8 weeks in August-September 2007 half of the soil was closed with a transparent polyethylene cover with a thickness of 0.025 mm, and in 2008 the number of foreign herbs in the parcels made by solarization and the production of tomatoes compared to the parcels not solarized, the effects of this application were determined on the general foreign herbs, some important foreign herbs in the experimental field and the production of tomatoes. The results of the assessments were found that the application of solarization in two different greenhouses increased the soil temperature at 5 cm depths above 10oC (13-14oC) and that the application reached a temperature above 50oC (51-53oC). The study found that the effect of solarization on all foreign herbs was 42%. The most important foreign grass species found in the greenhouses in which the study was carried out are Topalak (Cyperus rotundus L.), Clamped grass (Setaria verticillata (L.) P. by Beauv. It was the Melez beef (Amaranthus hybridus L.) and the Blue Flower Monster Tree (Phelipanche ramosa L.) In relation to the effects of solarization on foreign herbs, this application is 92, 90 and 97 percent effective against S. verticillata, A. hybridus and P. ramosa, respectively. It was found ineffective against the rotundus species and it was found that this application increased the production of tomatoes by 24-27%. As a result, the eight-week solarization was found to be successful in controlling many foreign herbs and parasites from foreign herbs. According to these findings, in the production areas where these foreign herbs are a problem, this method is recommended for organic farming.
