Social media, which has become one of the most important means of mass communication today, increases the impact of individuals on their daily lives every day. Individuals communicate with close and distant others through social media and rebuild their own self-image through this field. But there are differences between the individual’s self in social life and the presentations of the self they perform through social media. The self-images created through social media and presented to others are the “visitor self” representing the individual’s self. The aim of this study is to analyze the formation of indicator identities through the social media uses of individuals through the approaches of George Herbert Mead, Erving Goffman and Manuel Castells. According to the study at the Department of Sociology of the University of Namiyaman, 110 question surveys were applied to 191 students using at least one of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram applications and the data collected were recorded in the SPSS and AMOS programs. Through the practices of social media use of young people, the concept of indicative self is identified and the first-level single-factor model is created and tested by the application of verifying factor analysis.
