Western travelers who visited the Ottoman Empire for various reasons shed light on much more of the general history in their travel books as people who also witnessed the past. Music, which is a part of daily life, and the instruments used in the performance of music are also the subjects that can be observed in these travel books. In the discipline of instrument science, stringed instruments consisting of a neck/fingerboard and a body/resonance box, played with a finger or a plectrum, are called lute-type instruments. In this article, the observations of Western travelers who visited the Ottoman Empire between the 16th and 19th centuries on lute instruments were examined. Particular attention has been paid to the fact that the sources examined are original travelogues translated and published in our language, but it should be noted that different studies on travelogues are also used in this article. In addition to lute-type instruments, travelers' views on Turkish Music were also evaluated through the travelogues examined. Especially the fact that the travelers who were in the Ottoman Empire for a while did not lose their ‘external’ perspective increased the importance of the data obtained. It is predicted that these data will contribute to the history of Turkish Music and Turkish Music. The findings presented in the conclusion section are presented in the light of the evaluations made.
