Râvi değerlendirmesi denildiği zaman akla ilk gelen usûl, cerh ve ta'dil yöntemidir. Hadislerin geçerliliğinin korunması, ravilerin durumlarının bilinmesi ve hadis rivayetine ehil olup olmadıkları mevzusu, bu ilmin çalışma sahasını oluşturur. Cemel ve Sıffin vakaları sonrası meydana gelen fitne-fesat hareketleri ve tarafgîrlik, beraberinde hadis uydurma faaliyetlerini de meydana getirmiştir. Bunun neticesinde râvilerin durumunun bilinmesi, adalet ve zapt vasıflarında herhangi bir eksikliğin olup olmamasının bilinmesi elzem hale gelmiştir. Bu sebeple de cerh ve ta'dil ilmi ile alakalı faaliyetler meydana gelmiştir. Bu ilimle uğraşanların başında İbn Ebî Hâtim er-Râzî gelmektedir. el-Cerh ve't-Ta'dîl adlı bir eser yazan İbn Ebî Hâtim, bu çalışma ile cerh ve ta`dîl alanındaki terimleri sistemleştirmiş, kendinden sonraki çalışmalara da kaynaklık teşkil etmiştir. İlahiyat ve İslami İlimler fakültelerinin açılışından günümüze kadar, cerh ve ta‘dîl alanında azımsanmayacak derecede eserlerin var olduğu görülmektedir. Bununla birlikte bu çalışmaların yeterli seviyede olmadığı, hatta bu alanda otorite kabul edilen münekkidlerin rical tenkit yöntemi ile ilgili çalışmaların çok az olduğu gözlemlenmektedir. Bu bağlamda Fikret ÖZÇELİK, Hadis Usûlüne Râvi Değerlendirme Metodu -İbn Ebî Hâtim Örneği- adlı bir çalışma yaparak bu alandaki eksikliği gidermeye gayret etmiştir.
