Abstract:

Alternative assessment method in the framework of physiological experiments: TGA worksheets
2020

Abstract:

The method of Prediction-Observation-Explanation (TGA), which is one of the methods of doing-live learning, requires students to predict the results of the event in the prepared event along with the causes, to observe the event and to interpret the similarities and differences between their forecasts and their observations. In this study, some experiments involved in the scope of general physiology subjects were conducted using the TGA method and the teacher candidates’ prediction, observation, description scientific process skills were studied. The data was collected using the "TGA study leaves" created by the researchers and taking the opinion of experts in the field of biology education. TGA worksheets prepared by researchers were applied to teachers candidates in a total of 6 experimental events in a 2-week process. Teacher candidates' answers on TGA worksheets are scored in the form of "0", "1" and "2" based on the degree score key. Teacher candidates’ prediction and observation scientific process skills have not changed. In the explanation phase, the total frequency of teachers who receive 2 points from the 1st week’s tests is 9, and the total frequency of teachers who receive 2 points from the 2nd week’s tests is 17. The results of this study showed that the use of TGA method-based paper leaves as an assessment tool in the field of physiology subjects, teachers’ candidates developed “explain scientific process skills”. Also, when the teacher candidates were examined the answers they gave to the TGA worksheets, they were found to have conceptual errors in the subjects "plasmolysis and deplazmolysis", "material transitions" and "photosenthesis". Thus, it can be said that the TGA method can be used as an alternative assessment method.

An Alternative Method Of Evaluation For Physiology Experiments: Poe Worksheets
2020
Author:
Abstract:

The Predict-Observe-Explain (POE) strategy is a hands-on learning method that requires students to predict the results of an activity and the reasons why this result will occur, observe the event, and compare and interpret the differences between their predictions and observations. In this study, some general physiology experiments were conducted using the POE strategy and the prospective teachers’ prediction, observation and explanation skills were analysed. Data was collected using “POE worksheets” developed by the researchers and finalised according to the views of experts in the field of teaching biology. The POE worksheets prepared by the researchers were implemented on prospective teachers over a two-week period wherein 6 experimental activities took place. The answers provided by the prospective teachers on the POE worksheets were received a score of “0”, “1”, or “2”. No change was observed in the prospective teachers’ science process skills of prediction and observation. However, in the explanation portion, the total frequency of prospective teachers who received 2 points in week one was 9 whereas the total frequency of prospective teachers who received 2 points in week two was 17. The results of this study show that using worksheets based on the POE strategy as evaluation tools for physiology topics enhanced prospective teachers’ “science process skill of explaining”. Analysis of the prospective teachers’ answers on the POE worksheets also showed that they had misconceptions about “plasmolysis and deplasmolysis”, “transfer of substances” and “photosynthesis”. Thus, we can say the POE strategy can also be used as an alternative method of evaluation.
