Abstract:

This study focuses on Turkey’s nuclear disarmament policy within the framework of normative theory. The study uses the concepts of normative aim, normative tool and normative effect that have been developed by Nathalie Tocci as three elements of normative theory, as units of analysis. Within these units of analysis, the study addresses Turkey’s nuclear disarmament policy’s dimensions towards aims, tools and affects via opposition, support and abstention of Turkey’s nuclear disarmament political initiatives. Through these points, across the conceptual framework created by Tocci, the main question of the study is that “To what extend does Turkey follow normative foreign policy towards nuclear disarmament approach? In this direction, the study which focuses on 2009-2019 period, consists of three parts. The first part examines the conceptual framework of normative theory and discusses its position in the literature of international relations. The second part handles normative dimensions of Turkey’s nuclear disarmament policy via the NPT regime. Lastly, the third part discusses these dimensions through the voting behavior and discourses at the UN General Assembly Sessions.
