After being introduced to Islam, Turks started serving as mercenaries in armies of Islamic states. They served in various ranks of first in the Umayyad army and then in the Abbasid army. Meanwhile, the Daylamites, had converted to Islam after Islamic states entered into the territory of Daylam in the 8th CE (3rd century AH) and also started being recruited into the Abbasid army. The Daylamites, were prominent with their battle qualities, and, like the Turks, also served in the army as mercenaries. The Daylamites, encountered the Turks for the first time in the Abbasid army, and these two groups to fall into strife from time to time within the Abbasid army. Due to the Turks being in the upper echelons of the Abbasid army, the Daylamites always considered the Turks their rivals. As a result of the weakening of the Abbasid political authority in the 10th century CE (4th century AH), many local dynasties emerged in Iran. As one of these, the Buyids of Daylamite origin soon dominated west of Iran and also conquered the Abbasid caliphate. This study will evaluate the causes of the conflicts between the Turks and the Daylamites, and the rebellion Commander Rūzbihān of Daylam, which endangered the political life of the Buyid dynasty, using primary sources from the period.
