The word “literacy” indicates the state of being literate, i.e. the ability to operate in a literate society, with social relationships mainly based on scripts. ICT is transforming the literate society into a digital society, which requires new abilities. Digitally literate individuals are able to live in a digital society using its objects and technologies. They are ICT literate, meaning that they can use technology effectively. They are media literate, in that they know how to use different languages and tools related to different communication channels. They are information literate, i.e. able to solve information problems. They are active members of a society characterized by collective intelligence, in other words they know how to use and produce knowledge by accessing, sharing and collaborating with others in knowledge development.
