As one of the most important constituents in literary genres, place sometimes takes an active role by getting ahead of action and fiction. The place factor came to the fore in the Tanzimat Literature and become virtually the protagonist in modern times. Sometimes the place of a novel even turned into “the novel of a place”. Being a source of inspiration for many artists and intellectuals, Istanbul is one of these places due to its historical background and cosmopolitan characteristics. As a postmodern writer, Murat Gülsoy joined the literature at the end of the 20th century and wrote his only historical novel about the Second Constitutional Era: “In the City of Shadows and Dreams”. The work, which was fictionalized with the letters written by Fuat, son of Beşir Fuat, one of the important intellectuals of the Turkish intellectual world, to his friend Alex, deals with Istanbul between the years 1908-1909 through the eyes of a Turk who returned to his country years later. By walking around the city step by step and recording it through letters, the work becomes a travel book. In the novel “In the City of Shadows and Dreams”, Gülsoy wrote a novel about a city and attributed a personality to the city. This novel merges history and cultural values with the folk narratives and Istanbul, with its interior and exterior spaces, is vividly depicted in it during and after the preparations of the Constitutional Era. The present study aimed to investigate the concept of place in a postmodernist text through historical perception, and Istanbul in the Second Constitutional Era will be analyzed from the perspective of a Turkish young man who grew up in Paris.
