The Conquest of İstanbul by the Turks caused the Christian world to focus attention on the east. Because İstanbul has served as a buffer zone, almost a break between the Ottoman Empire and the West for a long time. The conquest of İstanbul didn’t only leave dominance of the strait to the Turks, but also opened a new page in the eastern problem. As a matter of fact, another leg of the diplomatic struggle between the western powers in order to seize the lands of the Ottoman Empire was İstanbul. İstanbul, which is almost a red apple for the west, has been the target of secret sharing agreements for hundreds of years. Until the 20th century, the desire to possess it was revealed by France, Greece, Russia and even Bulgaria. Greece, which was supported by the British with weapons and ammunition in seizing İstanbul, which was always the target of the ambitions of rival states, claimed rights over İstanbul as it saw itself as the heir of the Roman Empire. But one of the states that curbed Greece’s ambitions was the Vatican that supported the İtalian government with all its means, while İtaly was getting closer to Türkiye during the national struggle. What led the Vatican to this path was the Orthodox patriarchate, which received great support from the Greek government. One of the views put forward about İstanbul was that the city should be given an international status. In this paper, the discussions on the future of İstanbul during the national struggle period will be analyzed.
