Happiness has been a question that has long been concerned. The definition of happiness and how happiness can be achieved has been questioned since very ancient times. The basis of happiness is the level of social communication and interaction. The main areas of interaction and communication are families. This study examined the differentiation of happiness levels according to the family characteristics of high school students (family structure, parent attitude, family income level, time spent in the family). The sample of the study is made by 489 students who are continuing their studies in a secondary education institution in the central district of Çanakkale. The study included the “Oxford Happiness Scale” which was developed by Hills and Argyle and adapted to Turkish by Doğan and Sapmaz (2012). In an analysis aimed at determining the internal consistency of the measurement, the Cronbach alpha reliability ratio was calculated at 0.76. The SPSS statistics program has been used using visual statistical analysis methods in the analysis of data. The study found that happiness points differed significantly according to family structure, parents’ attitudes towards children, family income levels, while happiness points did not differ significantly according to the time spent in the family. Large, democratic, middle-income families have found their children much happier than others.
Happiness has been the topic of curiosity for a long time. Definition of happiness and how to reach it have been questioned since ancient times. It is stated that social communication and interaction level is the basis of happiness. The most basic interaction and communication areas are people’s families. In this study, the differentiation status of happiness levels according to family properties of high school students (family structure, parental attitude, family income level, time spent with the family) was investigated. The study group is composed of 489 students continuing their education in Çanakkale in a High school. Within the scope of the research, the Oxford Happiness Scale which was developed by Hills and Argyle and adapted to Turkish by Doğan and Sapmaz (2012) was applied. For internal consistency of the scale, Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient was calculated as 0.76. SPSS program and descriptive statistical analysis methods were used to analyze the data. As a result of this study; happiness scores showed a significant difference according to family structure, parents' attitudes towards their children and family income levels, while happiness scores did not show significant difference according to time spent by family. Large, democratic, middleincome families’ children have been found to be much happier than the other children.
