In second language teaching grammar lessons should not only aim at developing learners’ grammatical competence, but also improve their communicative competence. Pedagogic discourse-grammar approach to grammar instruction explains the use of ‘grammar’ in ‘discourse’ to develop learners’ communicative competence. To this end, this article outlines main concepts underlying pedagogic discourse grammar approach by giving examples from Turkish spoken corpora and proposes that discourse-based language items should be incorporated in materials designed for teaching Turkish as second language
