Fotoğraf makinesinin icadından hemen sonra fotoğraf teknolojisinin gerçekliği temsil edip etmediği veya ne derece temsil ettiği tartışılır hale gelmiştir. İlk dönem gerçeklik tartışmaları daha çok objektif seçimi, alan derinliği, pozlama, açı, çerçeveleme ve kompozisyon gibi öğelerle gerçekliğin değiştirildiği üzerineyken son dönem gerçeklik tartışmaları ise insani niteliklerin (yanılsama, düşünme, bilinç, ayartma, imge, arzu, sahne, ilişki, simgesellik gibi) yok olduğu üzerinedir. Yine güncel tartışmalar dijital imaj döneminde artık fotoğrafın ortadan kaybolduğu, imgenin dijital imajları anlayamayacağı, gerçekliğin öznel yönünün yok edildiği ve ismine fotoğraf denilemeyecek farklı bir görsel imaj dönemine geçildiği hususundadır. Fotoğrafın analog döneminde kazanmış olduğu doğal sihir, yanılsama, düşünme, belirme ve kaybolma kavramları fotoğrafın gerçekliğine gönderme yaparken ve fotoğrafı nevi şahsına münhasır bir form halini kazandırırken dijital fotoğraflarda fotoğraflama sürecinden önce fotoğraf makinesine yüklenen hazır kodlar ve çekim esnasında meydana gelen manipülasyonlar ve algoritmik işlemler fotoğrafın gerçekliğini ortadan kaldırmıştır. Bu çalışmada, gerçeklik nosyonu kavramsal bir çerçeveye ve tanımlamaya oturtularak analog fotoğraftan dijital fotoğrafçılığa geçişle birlikte fotoğrafik gerçekliğin dönüşümü açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Yine çalışmada fotoğrafik gerçekliği izah etmede kullanılan aura (hale), tayf, studium, punctum gibi kavramlar analog ve dijital fotoğrafçılık bağlamında ele alınarak gerçekliğin insani yönünün ortaya konulması amaçlanmıştır.
Immediately after the invention of the camera, it has become controversial whether or not the camera technology represents reality or how it represents. The first phase of reality discussions is more about the change of reality with elements such as objective choice, field depth, exposure, angle, framework and composition, while the last phase of reality discussions is about the disappearance of human qualities (like misleading, thinking, consciousness, setting, image, desire, scene, relationship, symbolism). Again, the current discussions are about the fact that in the digital image era the image is now gone, the image cannot understand the digital images, the objective aspect of reality is destroyed, and the image is passed into a different visual image that cannot be named photo. The natural magic, misunderstanding, thinking, appearance and disappearance concepts that the photo has gained in the analogue period, while sending the photo to the reality and making the photo a unique shape to the person of the image, the digital photographs have the ready codes uploaded to the camera before the photography process and the manipulations and algorithmic processes occurring during the photography have eliminated the reality of the photo. In this study, the perception of reality was put into a conceptual framework and defining, with the transition from analog photography to digital photography trying to explain the transformation of photographic reality. Again, the concepts such as aura (hale), tayf, studium, punctum used in the study to explain photographic reality in the context of analog and digital photography aimed at revealing the human side of reality.
