Abstract:

Expo organizations (International Exhibitions) are international large-scale organizations held throughout the world since the 19th century. The expo organizations, also known as Mega events, were initially organized on the basis of more industrial production, the promotion of technological products and the trade, as well as the influence of the industrial revolution. But at the end of the 20th century and in the 21st century, the concept of sustainability, along with the global problems the world faces, has become the dominant theme in the expo organizations. These organizations contribute in many areas, such as social, economic, environmental, cultural, education, urban green infrastructure, international promotion and prestige for host cities. Turkey was also interested in these events in the periods before and after the Republic. For the first time in the period of the Ottoman State, Turkey participated in these organizations with the 1851 London Expo organization, hosted in the province of Antalya in 2016 and in 2021 hosted in the province of Hatay. In this study, in which information about the expo experience of Turkey is collected, the expo 2016 Antalya’s sustainability appraisals are evaluated and recommendations for the sustainable use of the expo exhibition area in the subsequent process.
