Savunma harcamaları ile ekonomik büyüme arasındaki ilişki genellikle Benoit hipotezi çerçevesinde ele alınmaktadır. Benoit hipotezine göre savunma harcamalarında meydana gelen artış ekonomik büyümeyi pozitif yönde etkilemektedir. Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’de 1960-2017 dönemi için savunma harcamaları ve ekonomik büyüme arasındaki ilişki Fourier yaklaşımı ile analiz edilmiştir. Değişkenlerin durağanlık durumları Fourier ADF birim kök testi ile sınanmış ve her iki değişkenin de düzeyde durağan olmadığı, birinci farkı alındıktan sonra durağan hale geldiği anlaşılmıştır. Değişkenler arasındaki uzun dönemli ilişkinin varlığını araştırmak amacıyla Fourier ADL eşbütünleşme testi uygulanmış ve savunma harcamaları ile ekonomik büyüme arasında uzun dönemli ilişki olmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Yapılan analizler Türkiye’de Benoit hipotezinin geçerli olmadığını göstermektedir.
The relationship between defence spending and economic growth is often discussed in the framework of Benoit hypothesis. According to Benoit hypothesis, the increase in defence spending has a positive impact on economic growth. In this study, the relationship between defense spending and economic growth for the period 1960-2017 in Turkey was analyzed with the Fourier approach. The stagnation conditions of the variables have been tested by the Fourier ADF unit root test and it has been found that both variables are not stagnant at the level, after the first difference has been taken, it has become stagnant. In order to investigate the existence of the long-term relationship between variables, Fourier ADL integration test was implemented and it was found that there was no long-term relationship between defense spending and economic growth. Analysis shows that the Benoit hypothesis is not valid in Turkey.
The relationship between defense expenditures and economic growth is generally considered within the framework of the Benoit hypothesis. According to the Benoit hypothesis, increase in the defense expenditures positively affects economic growth. In this study, the relationship between defense expenditures and economic growth in Turkey for the period 1960-2017 analyzed with the Fourier approach. The stationarity of the variables was examined with the Fourier ADF unit root test. It is understood that the variables are not stationary at the levels but both stationary at the first differences. The Fourier ADL cointegration test was applied to investigate the existence of the long term relationship between the variables and it was determined that there is no long-run relationship between defense expenditures and economic growth. The analysis show that Benoit hypothesis is not valid in Turkey.
