Tourism is considered to be a development tool, especially in developing countries and the support of local residents is one of the main pillars of sustainable tourism. Therefore, scholars frequently examine the local residents’ perceptions of tourism. However, studies mostly focus on a single mature tourism destination. Destinations experiencing different types and stages of tourism development, and having different socio-economic characteristics are rarely compared. This study using quantitative research methods compares four destinations that differ in terms of tourism development and economic features. The results reveal that negative effects in mature destinations, and positive effects in emerging destinations are at the forefront, and affect local people's support of tourism. The findings empirically support that the tourism planning and development process should be carried out in a destination-specific manner and takes into account the views of the local people.
