This study aims to determine school students’ perceptions of social media through examining the metaphors they develop. It is based on qualitative research. The study group consists of 153 voluntary students from all grades of a public middle school in Yunusemre district of Manisa province. The data was collected through a structured metaphor form developed by the researchers. Then, a content analysis is conducted on the available data. The research findings reveal that 68 meaningful metaphors about social media being independent of one another have been produced. The metaphors produced by the participating students include concepts, such as earth, life, books, letters, and garbage. These metaphors were grouped under 9 basic themes (addiction, communication, time wasting, entertainment tool, comprehensive and broad, informative and enlightening, necessity, socialization, and dangerous and harmful). Middle school students' varying perceptions of social media were discussed in the context of media literacy, then.
