The changing role of religion with industrialization and its analysis are at the heart of the birth of sociology that was systematized in the early 20th century as an academic discipline. It can be said that sociology emerged as a response to the waves of confusion and shock that they encounter in the transition from the traditional society where religion is strong, to the modern society where religion is becoming less important. Therefore, it can be stated that the beginning of sociology is also the beginning of social and religious research. But when it comes to the founding figures of sociology such as Saint Simon, Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Émile Durkheim, Max Weber, and their ideas on the subject of religion, it is possible to face that undepth judgments from time to time become dominant thoughts in academic texts. According to Marx, religion is affinity and is used by the capitalists to sleep societies.“Simon and Comte said that the religion would disappear.” “The founders of sociology have defended the idea that religion will be destroyed by modernization.” They meet words like. This article, however, claims that the creators' claims about religion need more consensus. Therefore, the purpose of the article is to present to the reader together the ideas of the five founding names mentioned in religion and in particular the future of religion. The main objective of the selection of these five historical figures for the article is that they are the founding figures of the field of sociology and religious sociology and in many academic texts – although not so – they are based on “the claim that religion will disappear by modernization”. The study was written using English and Turkish-published works of the thinkers and secondary sources related to the subject. It should be noted that the article has two modest main objectives: First, to be given the opportunity to re-review some claims attributed to thinkers. The second is to present the literature in the entrance to the reader for those who want to read more in detail.
The changing role of religion due to industrialization and its analysis were at the very center of the birth of sociology that became systematized in the early 20th century as an academic discipline. It can be said that sociology emerged as a response to the shock waves encountered in the transition from the traditional society where religion had been strong to the modern society where it became less important. For this reason, it can be said that the beginning of sociology was also the beginning of academic inquires of interaction between religion and society. However, when it comes to the founding figures of sociology such as Saint Simon, Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Émile Durkheim, Max Weber and their thoughts on religion, it can be encountered occasionally that superficial judgments may become the dominant thought or tendency in academic texts. For example, these sentences are common in intellectual world: “According to Marx, religion is opium and it is used by capitalists to govern societies.”, “Simon and Comte stated that religion will disappear.” or “The founders of sociology argued that religion will disappear with modernization.” This article, however, argues that the claims of the founding figures regarding religion need more attention. For this reason, the aim of the article is to present the ideas of this five well-known figures about religion and especially the future of religion to the reader. The main reason of selecting these five historical figures for the article are that they are the founding figures of sociology and the sociology of religion, and although they do not support the idea that “religion will disappear with modernization”, their works are used to state this claim. The works of thinkers and secondary sources published in English and Turkish on this topic were used. The article has two modest goals: i) to restimulate some discussions on the ideas/claims attributed to thinkers and ii) to present the relevant literature to the reader as an introduction for those willing to read these thinkers in detail.
