Osmanlılıların Kur’ân-ı Kerîm’i anlama ve yorumlama süreçlerinde en fazla etkili olmuş tefsirin Kâdî Beyzâvî’nin Envâru’t-tenzîl’i olduğu söylenebilir. Osmanlı ilmiyesi, tefsir eğitimlerini bu eser üzerinden yürütmüş, onun üzerine pek çok hâşiye kaleme almıştır. Bununla birlikte müfessir Beyzâvî’nin bu eserindeki tefsir tercihleri bazı âlimlerce tenkitlere uğramıştır. Ona çok sayıda eleştiri yöneltenlerden biri Osmanlı âlimlerinin en mümtazlarından kabul edilen Şeyhülislâm İbn Kemâl Paşa’dır. Örneğin İbn Kemâl Paşa, Bakara sûresinin inkarcılara dünya hayatının süslendiğini (züyyine) anlatan 212. âyetinin tefsirinde bu süsleme işini yapanın hakikî fâilinin “şeytan” olduğunu belirtmiş, “Allah” olduğunu söyleyen Beyzâvî’nin hatalı olduğunu iddia etmiştir. Ancak onun Beyzâvî’ye yönelttiği bu eleştirisi cevapsız kalmamıştır. Sahaflar Şeyhizâde Es‘ad Efendi, İbn Kemâl’e itirazlarını içeren müstakil bir risale telif etmiştir. Es‘ad Efendi bu risalesinde öncelikle görüşlerini temellendireceği esasları açıkladığı bir giriş yazmış, ardından da İbn Kemâl’in yorumunun beş açıdan isabetli olmadığını ortaya koymaya çalışmıştır. Bu makalede ise Es‘ad Efendi’nin söz konusu risalesine dair bir inceleme yazısı ve yazma halindeki metnin transkripsiyonu yer almaktadır. Bu makale ile Osmanlı dönemi tefsir literatürü içindeki eleştiri kültürüne işaret edilerek Osmanlıların Kur’ân’ı yorumlama faaliyetlerine dair tespitlerin derinleştirilmesine katkı sağlamak amaçlanmıştır.
