Soğuk Savaş döneminde Amerika Birleşik Devletleri (ABD) ve Sovyetler Birliği arasında silahlanma ve nükleer yarış başlamıştır. Sovyet Rusya’nın yayılmacı politikası ve buna karşılık ABD’nin attığı adımlar gerilimlerin artmasına neden olmuştur. 1 Mayıs 1960 tarihinde, Türkiye’deki Adana İncirlik hava üssünden kalkan Amerikan U-2 uçağının, Sovyet Rusya tarafından düşürülmesi ABD ve Sovyet Rusya’yı bir savaşın eşiğine getirmiştir. Olayın kamuoyuna yansımasıyla birlikte, Sovyet Rusya sert bir tutum takınmış, Türkiye’nin de içinde bulunduğu Batılı devletleri gerekirse bir dünya harbinin çıkabileceğini söyleyerek tehdit etmiştir. Bu çalışmada Türkiye, ABD ve İngiltere’deki ulusal gazetelerden de faydalanılarak olayın seyri ve çözümü adına atılan adımlar incelenmiştir
Between the United States and the Soviet Union started the arms and nuclear race during the cold war. Soviet Russia’s expansionist policy and the United States’ alliances against this policy resulted in escalated tensions.On May 1, 1960, an American aircraft named U-2, which was departed from Adana İncirlik airbase in Turkey, shot by the Soviet Russia made the two countries to the brink of a war. When the U-2 incident was reflected in the public, the Soviet Russia maintained a tough stance and threatened the Western States including Turkey if necessary, as saying that the threat of a world war to come.In this study, the steps taken on behalf of the course of the incident and the solution have been studied by utilizing the national newspapers in Turkey, the United States and United Kingdom
