The Dispute of the Viri Docti over the Lyciarchy Solved. Documents of Lyciarchs from the family of Dionysii from Neisa On the basis of an honorific inscription found in Patara for the Lyciarch Dionysios II, it has recently been argued that the title "Lyciarches" was conceded only to those persons who simultaneously held the offices of archiereus and grammateus of the Lycian Federation and that in this sense the Lyciarchy was to be understood as a superordinate term for both top posts of the Federation. However, the epigraphic evidence shows that these posts were usually held separately and that both the archiereus and the grammateus were entitled to bear the title ≪Lyciarches≫. Consequendy, the Lyciarchy commenced with the tenure of the grammateia of the Federation. This post at the same time meant the designation for the archiereia of the Augusti. In this context all epigraphic documents known to date about the Lyciarch family of the Dionysii are compiled here. We get to know this family from the mountain town of Neisa somewhat better thanks to a total of nine inscriptions from various Lycian cites (most of them from Patara). A certain Metrodoros, probably from the Hadrianic-Antonine period, is mentioned as the family's ancestor, while the other family members were called either Demosthenes or Dionysios. All three Dionysii mentioned in the genealogic inscription (no. 7) in a father-son relationship were Lyciarchs under Commodus, Septimius Severus and in 244 AD.
