1902 ile 1950 yılları arasında Türkiye’ye birçok kez gelen yazar ve deniz subayı olan Claude Farrère (1876-1957), Türkiye ve Türklerle ilgili çok sayıda kitap yazmıştır. Türkiye’ye ilk seyahatinde, Türk düşmanı ve Yunan dostu olarak gelmiştir fakat Fransa’ya Türk dostu ve Yunan düşmanı olarak dönmüştür. Yazar, eserlerinde başta Osmanlı Türkleri olmak üzere Cumhuriyetçileri ele almıştır. Pierre Loti gibi, Farrère de Türkleri, “gaddar”, “vahşi”, “barbar” ve “uygar olmayan” olarak betimleyen çoğu Oryantalist yazarlardan ayrılmıştır. Türkleri tasvir etmek için, onları Yunanlarla, Ermenilerle, Bulgarlarla ve elbette Fransızlarla karşılaştırır. Bu çalışmada yazarın Oryantalist bakışında bu faklı milletlerin imgelerinin karşılaştırılma çalışması yapılacaktır. Çalışmalarımız bize Farrère’in Fransızların diğer milletler üzerindeki üstünlüğünü ortaya koyarak, Türklerin ve Yunanların asırlık imgelerini “allak bullak” ettiğini ve Ermenileri eleştirmeye cesaret ettiğini göstermektedir.
Claude Farrère (1876-1957), a writer and marine officer who came to Turkey many times between 1902 and 1950, has written many books about Turkey and Turks. In his first trip to Turkey, he came as a Turkish enemy and a Greek friend but returned to France as a Turkish friend and a Greek enemy. The writer addressed the Republicans, including the Ottoman Turks, in his works. Like Pierre Loti, the majority of Farrère de Turks described as “gardant”, “wild”, “barbaric” and “unwilling” are separated from the Oriental writers. To describe the Turks, he compares them with the Greeks, the Armenians, the Bulgarians, and of course the French. In this study, the writer’s Orientalist view will compare the images of these poor nations. Our studies show us Farrère's superiority over the other nations, that the Turks and Greeks "make the image of the century" and dare to criticize the Armenians.
Claude Farrère (1876-1957), a French writer and naval officer who visited Turkey often between 1902 and 1950, wrote numerous books about this country and its people. On his first voyage there, he was a turcophobe and a philo-hellenist, but when he returned to France, he became a turcophile with anti-Greek sentiments. In his works, Claude Farrère treated the Republicans putting the Ottoman Turks ahead. As Pierre Loti did, Farrère distinguished himself from the majority of Western writers who portrayed Turks “cruel,” “savage,” “barbaric,” and “uncivilized.” He puts Turks on an equal footing with other nations by comparing them with the Greeks, Armenians, Bulgarians and, of course, the French. This study will present images of those nations depicted by Farrère. We thus indicate how Farrère dares to “distort” the ancestral images of Turks and Greeks as well as criticize the Armenians, by revealing the supremacy of the French over other nations.
