Abstract:

Violence; it is a phenomenon that needs to be considered with its physical, psychological, individual and social dimensions. Throughout human life, these different kinds of violence are encountered. Violence is a learned behavior rather than an innate behavior. Apart from psychological problems, family and friends and mass media are the environments that are effective in learning, applying, spreading and getting used to violence. In other words, like other behaviors, people learn about violence from the environment where they are living, and they can transfer it to the next generations like a cultural heritage. Folk songs, which give important clues about the way of life and the expression of their feelings, are learned from generation to generation by ear. Violent expressions in the lyrics of Turkish folk songs are also the elements learned and transferred to the next generations. This situation can cause to the continuity of violent expressions through music, to become accustomed depending on the frequency of repetition over time, to normalize and to become socially accepted behaviors. In this study, Turkish Folk Songs that contain violence in their words are considered by using the descriptive survey model. Violent expressions detected 1406 folk songs were analyzed according to their types, regions, severity of violence and distribution in the context of words containing violence. Violent words in the songs were evaluated not only with the meaning of the word, but also on the holistic and general meaning expressed by the folk songs. As a result of the detailed evaluations made in this context, it was determined that the violent words expressed different dimensions of violence in each song.
