Abstract:

Although the appearance as an interpretative framework begins with Taylor and Eisenstadt, it can be said that Western style modernization discussions, attitudes and moderate or radical solutions that can be perceived as "multi-modernities" have gone older than that. In the Ottoman society, which has been exposed to the effects of modernization of the Western style along with the process that began with Tanzimat, anti-modernization and supportive views have been widely discussed both in the Islamic section and among the western supportive light. The purpose of this article is to keep track of the alleged Turkish modernization discussions that began with Tanzimat while also to point out the traces of the multi-modernization/modernity discussions in the Ottoman society. The discussion of the topics calling for multiple modernities, even though unnamed among the Ottoman light in the 1800s, can be read as an indicator of the foundations of today’s discussions, regardless of where the tour was emerged.
