Girişimcilerin topluma ve ekonomiye yapmış oldukları katkı göz önüne alındığında, girişimci birey sayısının artmasının önemi ortaya çıkmaktadır. Girişimci sayısının artması, toplumda genç bireylerin girişimciliğe ilgi duyması ile doğrudan ilişkilidir. Bu çalışmada üniversite öğrencilerinin girişimciliğe ilgi duymaları ile ilişkili olabilecek faktörler tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Araştırma, biri devlet diğeri vakıf üniversitesi olmak üzere iki farklı üniversitede eğitim gören 671 öğrenciden toplanan verilere dayalı olarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda iş yaşamında özgürlük isteyenler ile girişimcilikle bireysel ve sosyal avantajlar elde edeceğini düşünenlerin girişimciliğe daha çok ilgi duyduğu görülmüştür. Ayrıca iktisadi ve idari bilimler fakültesinde okuyan öğrenciler, mühendislik fakültesi öğrencilerine göre; aile ve arkadaş çevrelerinde girişimci olanlar, olmayanlara göre girişimciliğe daha yüksek ilgili duymaktadırlar. Diğer yandan, girişimci olmak için gereken bireysel niteliklere sahip olmadığını düşünen öğrencilerin girişimciliğe olan ilgisi düşüktür. Cinsiyet, girişimcilikle ilgili risk algısı ve girişimcilerin aşırı iş yükü olduğu yönündeki kaygı değişkenleri ile girişimciliğe ilgi arasında herhangi bir ilişki görülmemiştir.
