The aim of this research is to study whether high-quality high school students have problem-solving skills and the relationship between their career development and whether sub-dimensions of their career development can be depleted with their problem-solving skills. The research group consisted of 133 highly skilled students (75 girls, 58 men) between the ages of 12-15 who studied in the Science and Arts centers. As a data collection tool, personal information form, problem-solving inventory and career development scale for children have been used. In the study, the data was analyzed using multiple regression analysis. It has been found that there are meaningful relationships in a positive direction between the career development of highly talented students and their problem-solving skills. Career development scale has found that sub-dimensions of curiosity and research, planning, control focus and self-sufficiency are meaningful contributors to problem-solving skills of high school students. Interesting and research behaviors are developed, focusing on planning for the future, heavily controlled and self-conceptive high-talent high school students who have high problem-solving skills. The findings, based on the relevant field, have been discussed, presented recommendations for future research.
Present study aims at examining the relation between problem solving competence of gifted children and their career development, and exploring whether the sub-dimensions of career development are predictors of problem solving (in the same setting). The participants of the study consisted of 133 gifted students enrolled in Science and Arts Centre. Of the participants, 75 were female and 58 were male, and they ranged 12-15 years in age. The data was gathered through personal information form, problem solving inventory and career development scale for children. The data were analyzed through multiple regression analysis. Positive and significant relations were found between the career development of gifted children and their problem solving skills. Curiosity, exploration, planning, locus of control and self-concept, which are among the nine dimensions conceptionalized by Super (1990), and constitute sub-dimensions of Childhood Career Development Scale, were identified to be predictors of problem solving competences/skills of gifted children at secondary school level. Secondary school students with higher curiosity, research interest levels, high opinions of planning their future, self/internal control over their choices and positive self-concepts were determined to have high problem solving skills. Findings were discussed in the light of the available literature and some suggestions were offered.
