Polis meslek yüksekokulu öğrencilerinin genel okuma durumlarını, okul yaşamı ve şartları çerçevesinde tespit etmeyi amaçlayan bu çalışma Gaziantep Polis Meslek Yüksekokulunda öğrenim gören 20 öğrenci ile yapılmıştır. Durum çalışması olan araştırmada bütüncül tek durum deseni kullanılmıştır. Veriler yarı-yapılandırılmış görüşme formu ile toplanmıştır. Elde edilen veriler tümevarımcı içerik analizi ile analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmada Yüksekokulun, çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin okuma durumlarını genel anlamda olumlu etkilediği ancak bunun yeterli olmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerin önemli bir bölümünün Yüksekokul öğrenciliğinden önce kitap okumaya değer verme ve kitap okuma alışkanlığına sahip olma bakımından beklenen düzeyde olmadığı; bu öğrencilerden bazılarının Yüksekokula geldikten sonra söz konusu durumlarda ilerleme kaydettiği ortaya çıkmıştır. Öğrencilerin çoğu okulda ,sistemli olmamakla birlikte, kendilerini okumaya güdüleyen etkenler bulunduğunu ancak okumak için kendilerinin temel koşul olarak gördükleri sessizliğin sağlanamaması nedeniyle uygun ortamın bulunmadığını bildirmişlerdir. Yatılı resmî okul düzeninin önceki yaşamlarına oranla sosyal hayattan uzak bıraktığı öğrencilere göre kitap okumanın en iyi serbest zaman etkinliği olması, onların kitap okumanın değeri konusunda yeterli bilinçte olmadıklarını göstermiştir. Okulda mesai saatleri dışında kütüphane sorumlusu olarak görevlendirilen öğrencilerin, kitap okuma konusunda arkadaşlarına olumlu model oluşturdukları tespit edilmiştir. Bu durumun öğrencilerin Yüksekokul kütüphanesine ilişkin olumlu görüşlerini pekiştirdiğini ortaya koyan öğrenci söylemleri, kütüphanenin güncel kitaplar yönünden yetersiz olduğu konusunda da uzlaşmaktadır.
This study which aims to determine general reading condition of police vocational college students within the frame of school life and conditions was conducted with 20 students who receive education at Gaziantep Police Vocational College. In this case study, integrated single case pattern was used. Data were collected with semi-structured interview. Data obtained were analyzed with inductive content analysis. In the study it was determined that Police Vocational College has positive effect on reading status of students but that is insufficient. It was concluded that significant part of the students at College do not prize reading books and do not have the habit of reading as much as they are expected; some of them have made progress in these mentioned issues after being educated at the college. Most of the students informed that though not systematical, there are factors motivating them to read books at school. In addition to this, students think there is no available environment to read since silence is not provided for them which is the basic condition for reading. When it is regarded that reading book is the best leisure time activity for students who are kept away from social life because of living a boarding school life, it is clear that these students are not aware of the value of reading book adequately. It was concluded that students who are charged as custodian for out of working hours serve as a positive model about reading books. Student discourses which put forward that positive attitude towards school library are reinforced by this case also agree on the fact that library is incapable in the sense of current books.
