Before, during and in the aftermath of the May 27 coup the mainstream press was utilized by the military bureaucracy as a means to persuade people about ‘justifications of the coup’. The press is a useful instrument for this purpose. It is obvious that the coup organizers attempted to manipulate the public opinion through the newspapers and journals close to them. However, the effect of press used in order to legitimize the coup and bolster public support did not bring about the desired outcomes; this can be seen in the fact that the public support for the parties close to the Democrat Party continued in the elections after the coup. Therefore, it is clear that this military intervention was formed not only by means of internal dynamics but also through international environment and external dynamics. Nevertheless, the approach of mainstream press towards this intervention was built on the approval of the actual state rather than analyzing the coup, discussing the siginificance of intervention in the international system or criticizing what happened in the aftermath of the coup. In this study, the attitude of mainstream press was questioned and exemplified.
