Özet:

In the Village Institutes, it was aimed to educate children by taking them out of their villages and sending them back there to be able to create a teacher model who is used to the village conditions. The essence of the teaching program in the Village Institutes was composed of practice and teaching by practice. Learning techniques such as observation, experiment, research, examination and discussion were used effectively. The success of the village institutes were laid on the methods they employed. The aim of this study is to identify the methods and techniques used in all the courses of the Village Institutes based on their graduates’ views. To address the sub-question of the study, case study being one of the qualitative research methods was used. In the data gathering process, interview method was preferred and consequently a semi-structured interview form was employed. Snowball sampling being one of the purposive sampling methods in qualitative research was used in identifying the sample. The interviews were conducted with 59 retired teachers who were the graduates of Village Institutes and could be reached in Denizli, Izmir, Mugla, Aydin, Manisa, Isparta, Usak, Dikili, Cal, Fethiye and Ortaca. The results revealed certain teaching methods: in the Village Institutes, contemporary methods such as project-based learning, practices towards multipleintelligence types, reading strategies, drama, cooperative learning were used. In the Institutes, ‘learning through arts’ was put into practice. With the effective use of reading strategies, individuals were trained to read, evaluate and comment on what they read
