THE EFFECT OF CREATIVE READING TECHNIQUES ON THE SIXTH GRADE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ OPINIONS OF READING SKILL

Reading is the key to learning and learning is the key to success, and it is very important to provide individuals with a correct and effective reading education since it will affect not only their academic life but also their whole life. It is known that creative reading practices are more beneficial than traditional reading studies in providing individuals with reading skills, since creative reading is based on individuals' reaching new schemas in their minds by going beyond the existing information through the information they have read through the texts they read. Therefore, in this study, it is aimed to determine the opinions of elementary school 2nd grade students about reading lessons planned with creative reading techniques. In the research, lesson plans prepared with creative reading techniques for three hours a week and for eight weeks were applied and the effect of creative reading techniques used before and after the application on students' reading skills was asked. Case study, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. The study group of the research consists of 20 students studying in the second year of elementary school in a public school in the 2021-2022 academic year. Appropriate sampling method was used to determine the study group. The opinions of 20 participants participating in the research were collected with a semi-structured interview form at the beginning and end of the creative reading process. The obtained data were analyzed and interpreted by content analysis. At the end of the research, participant students stated that creative reading techniques increased their reading comprehension achievement and their interest in reading. At the end of the research, it was concluded that creative reading techniques would be effective in improving students' reading comprehension success and in giving them positive opinions about reading skills.
