Özet:

This study discussed the causes, development, scope, effects and consequences of the compulsory mass migration by Bulgarian Turks from Bulgaria to Turkey in 1989. This study, which is frequently referred to by Bulgarian scientific resources, has reflected the political, demographic and socio-cultural dimensions of the great wave of ethnic migration in which the European continent has lived in the last quarter of the century. Discussing the human and ethical dimensions of this multi-dimensional compulsory migration, exposing its effects and reflections in the light of political geography in both Bulgaria and Turkey, is the main reason for writing this article. It is hoped that this study, which is important in terms of migration geography and political geography, will benefit geographers as well as historians, demographers, political scientists, sociologists and other scientists. This study is about the reasons, evolution, impact and outcomes of 1989 forced migration of Bulgarian Turks from Bulgaria to Turkey.  By frequent referring to the Bulgarian academic sources, this study analyzes this forced migration which is the largest ethnic wave of migration that took place in the last quarter of European history, from political, demographic and socio-cultural perspectives. Discussing the humanitarian and moral aspects of this migration and presenting the impact of the migration for Turkey and Bulgaria from the perspective of political geography are among the reasons why this study has been conducted. We hope that this study with its focus on geography of migrations and political geography, will be useful not only for geographers but also for political scientists, sociologists, demographers and other related field experts.
