Today, it is observed that garment forms mediate conceptual discourse via arrangements that include characteristics that are inherent to textile such as stretching, doubling, crumpling, degradation, agglomeration and transparency. Fiber art, expressing experimental works of art that are generated by textile fiber materials, became an independent branch or art in the 20th century. However, the position of garment and textile in conceptual orientation of art has been moving from aesthetic perspective to intellectual perspective. Artists present their artistic work by combining their own imageries and expressions with technique and aesthetic via interdisciplinary interactions in modern art such as painting, sculpture, architecture and textile/fiber. Especially since 1960’s, textile/fiber has been used as an artistic medium of expression via garment form and the garment has been transformed into an object that conveys/transmits imagery. Also, in terms of plastic values; the garment can be transformed into sculptural forms which are independent of the human body in addition to having the ability to present different forms with the movement of the mass it covers. With the help of interdisciplinary interactions, this study aims to evaluate and comprehend the works of art that are transformed into garments via body-form relationship and the transformation of garments into works of art with their symbolic meanings. By demonstrating how textile/fiber art is influenced by various disciplines, this study addresses the presentation of innovative forms of expression through interdisciplinary methods and techniques in addition to traditional textile techniques and the messages and emotional impact based on the period, individuals and symbolic meanings of various garment forms in conceptual art.
