The aim of this study is to elicit prospective social studies teachers’ suggestions about what kind of teaching materials must be used in the social studies courses by determining problems about the subjects which are unable to learn related to social studies in their previous educational lives. This study was designed with descriptive approach. In this case, the study was carried out with 346 prospective social studies teachers, studying as juniors and seniors in KTU, Fatih Faculty of Education, Social Studies Teacher Education Program in 2011-2012 academic year. The results of the study showed that majority of prospective social studies teachers haven’t learned some social studies subject area related topics and they indicate content and teaching-learning process oriented problems like teacher attitudes, lack of materials, difficulties of content and imperceptions in math. Also, to overcome these problems, prospective social studies teachers suggest that visuals like presentations, technological tools like computer, projector and smart board, some teaching materials like worksheets and timelines must be used in social studies courses.
