The crossroads of religion and gender in social life is the subject of different debates that are currently being discussed such as veiling practices, women religiousness, gender stereotypes in holy texts, the representation of religious women in media, Islamic feminism, religion and homosexuality. In this context, masters’ and doctoral dissertations have been completed under this study in which religion and gender issues in Turkey were discussed. When we examine the dissertations, contained in the Council of Higher Education (CoHE), that were completed in this field since 1990 a total number of 172 master thesis’s’, 39 PhD thesis’s’ including 211 registered dissertations was reached. When considering the current academic works on the subject, it has been found that the topic is mostly committed in sociology of religion and sociology fields of study. The dissertations were completed in Political Science and International Relations respectively. In addition, Women Studies, Communication, History, Fundamentals of Islamic Sciences and Literature and other departments were also studied. Firstly, this subject began to be studied in the 1990’s, it has gained great momentum in the last 10 years. The debate of the headscarf and veil seems to be at the forefront of the subjects covered in the study. It has been found that the position of women is a part and parcel of Basic Islamic Sciences. The other prominent issues covered in the dissertations are secularism and secularization, the position of women within the family, women in the context of social life, women in the movement of modernization, the visibility of religious women in the public sphere.
