After the government of the Azerbaijani National Republic (1918–1920) was overthrown and the Soviet Socialist regime was established, a lot of scholars and intelectuals had to leave their motherland. These people, who had to emigrate, fought to save their nation from enslavement for long years. The Soviet government not only appropriated the national resources of Azerbaijan, but also barred because of socialist ideological reasons the literary works created by the nation or in some cases allowed their existence only after those literary works were distorted and adapted to its own ideology. Azerbaijani scholars in the emigration fought against this suppression and tried to study and protect all the folklore samples in their original, correct and undistorted versions.
