Abstract enTurkish military veterinary training is a field that has been extensively researched, and both its beginnings and development phases are well narrated. Studies on the history of Turkish civilian veterinary medicine are, however, limited and there are still several issues that need to be elucidated. This present study aims to fill this gap with new archival material, by focusing on the education of the Ottoman veterinarians who provided veterinary services to the civilian population engaged in animal husbandry. It will try to clarify the beginning of civil veterinary education that took shape in the army, and the first legal regulations about the graduates.
