Abstract enThis study has been conducted in order to question the critical form and the content structure of short film. This research focuses on critical thinking and theory, discourse-counter discourse, and the relationship between ideology and alternativeness. In addition the research focuses on short films and types of short films, the relationship between short film, and democracy and critical discourse, the active viewer creating feature of short film and the alternative forms present in the area of short film in Turkey. In the analysis phase of the research, 11 short films included in Hisar Short Film Festival selections between 2005-2013 and selected by systematic sampling method have been examined by Christian Metz's five-stage semiotic analysis method that provides an analysis of moving images. For the analysis of the contents of these films; key oppositions, developed by Louis Gianetti, for bringing out the critical structure of a film, have been was utilized. For the analysis of the formal elements of the films, Battal Odabaşı’s table of " Functions of the Cinematographic Narrative Means in First, Second and Third Cinema " has been used. As a result, the study presents that short film is a critical discourse area that can handle any type of subject and content that doesn’t have the opportunity to be represented in the mainstream cinema, is an alternative media that handles social inequality, social justice, emphasis on identity problem and social reality, and provides the critical structure of short film not only with its content but also with its formal elements.
