The aim of the teachers’ guidebooks is to make the necessary explanations to the teachers regarding the learning of the researches and the activities which are required by the programs that were prepared with respect to the predetermined goals. While in the past the teachers had to prepare a syllabus, nowadays the guidebooks aim to present this preparation to the teachers in way which is clearer, more systematic and with activities. The most precious step during the first-grade of the elementary school is the teaching of reading and writing. Without a doubt, one of the most important materials of the first-grade teachers regarding teaching reading and writing, is the “I am learning reading and writing” guidebook. The primary aim of this research, besides identifying the teachers’ guidebook usage levels of the first-grade teachers regarding teaching reading and writing, is also to search for the reasons as well. The research is fulfilled based on scanning model which aims to describe both the existing and the past situations. The research is consisted of 87 class teachers whom selected by random method, all of them teach to the first-graders, and carry out their duty in elementary schools which are located in Malatya city. In this research, the teacher survey which is oriented to identify the level of “I am learning reading and writing” guidebook usage has been carried out. Percentage and frequency based on article have been used for identifying teacher opinions. With regards to the findings of the research, it has been determined that the percentage and the durations of the schoolteachers’ guidebook usage is not enough, the metaphors and the examples in the guidebooks are not qualified, the word and sentence examples which are produced according to the voices are inadequate, and additional resources with compact-discs have been used because there is no information technologies support that provides the students to understand better.
