Özet:

Reading books is a significant gain for every human being. It is even more important for the teacher candidates who will have a say in the education of new generation. It is commonly believed that the rate of reading habit in our country is significantly low. This study aims at determining and identifying the opinions and attitudes of 383 pre-school teacher candidates studying at Marmara University Atatürk Education Faculty & Uludag University Faculty of Education and Bulent Ecevit University Eregli Faculty of Education in the Primary Education Preschool Education Programs with regard to different variables. To serve for this aim, “Personal Information Form” -prepared by the researchers- and “Reading Habit Attitudes Scale” developed by Gömleksiz in 2004 were used. The data collected in the study were analyzed by using statistical methods such as “t-test” with an SPSS program, “ANOVA” and “Scheffe Test”. The analyses show a significant relationship in favor of the females on the pre-school teachers’ reading habit. In accordance with the habit of reading books in the school they graduated, among the Anatolian/Science High School and State Schools, the data revealed a significant relationship on the side of the Anatolian/Science High School graduates. Regarding the general attitudes that the mothers of the preschool teachers have toward raising children in the habit of reading; democratic families, among the authoritarian and the democratic ones, were significantly designated. However, there was found no significant correlation regarding the attitude of the fathers of candidate teachers on raising children in the habit of reading. When the pre-school teachers’ reading habits is considered according to their economic situation, there occurred a significant correlation on the side of those with high economic situation when compared to the ones with moderate economic situation
