The purpose of this study is to search teachers’ views with regard to initial literacy programme of the primary curriculum in light of the 1st and 2nd year teachers and reveal the problems faced during the implementation. The scope of the study is the 186 elementary school teachers working in the 38 schools located in the provincial centre of Uşak, in 2006-2007 academic year. Instead of sampling, the whole scope of the study has been reached. The measurement tool used for the research is the “First Literacy Evaluation Questionnaire”, which has been developed by the researcher. For the data analysis t-test, Tukey test and ANOVA analysis have been used. The research has exposed that teachers, having positive opinions regarding the first literacy program, find the gainings of the program quite reachable. Moreover, according to teachers, the classrooms with a large number of students face some implementation problems, the on-the-job trainings for the execution of the program are not adequate, and the students are experiencing problems concerning italic handwriting.
