Abstract This research aims to determine 7th grade primary and 9th grade secondary school students’ misconceptions about ratio and proportion. It also tries to and find out any differences for both of the grades with establishing any decline in the misconceptions. Total of 1085 students are chosen randomly from 20 different (10 primary and 10 secondary) schools. Specifically prepared diagnostic tests have been used for determining both grades students’ misconceptions. Results revealed that both groups of the students have misconceptions about ratio and proportion. It is observed that the students have lack of information about the definitions of ratio and proportion. They confuse the conceptions of ratio with fraction, digit and division. They have misconceptions about the point of ratio. They are not able to modify the sort of proportion in the given problems. They have difficulties in solving problems about direct and inverse proportions. It is also observed that both of the grades students have a misconception as “Each fraction digit is a ratio”. It is also found that misconceptions of 7th grade students have been decreased and some of them lasted at 9th grade in secondary school.
