Eğitim, insanlık tarihi boyunca önemsenen bir konu olmuştur. Bu tarihsel süreçte, insanlara ne öğretileceği ve nasıl öğretileceği ile ilgili birçok görüş ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu görüşlerin ortaya çıkmasında insan doğasına ilişkin temellendirmeler görülmektedir. İnsan doğasının ne olduğunun belirlenmesi eğitimin amacını da belirleyecek olan öğedir. Dolayısıyla bu araştırmada insan doğası kavramı önemli bir yer tutmuştur. Çalışmanın odağında, yaşadıkları dönemde düşünce ve uygulamaları ile eğitim bilimleri alanyazınında önemli etkileri görülen John Dewey ve İsmail Hakkı Tonguç’un insan doğasına ilişkin görüşlerinin eğitim üzerindeki yansımalarının incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Dewey ve Tonguç’un insan doğasına ve eğitime ilişkin görüşleri ortaya konularak karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmiştir. Doküman incelemesi modeli ile yürütülen bu araştırmada Dewey ve Tonguç’un eserleri ve onlar ile ilgili yazılmış eserlerden yararlanılmıştır. Yaşadıkları dönemin gereksinimlerine uygun bir eğitim felsefesi benimsedikleri ve düşüncelerini eğitim aracılığıyla gerçekleştirmeye çalıştıkları dikkat çekmektedir. Bu bağlamda, düşünürlerin öncelikle insan doğasının belirlenmesine önem verdikleri düşünülmektedir. Bunun nedeni, eğitimin amaçları ile yöntemlerinin belirlenmesinde insan doğası tanımlamalarından yararlanmaları olarak görülmüştür. Evrensel değerleri benimseyen Dewey ve Tonguç, eğitim aracılığıyla yetişecek bireylerin de bu değerleri benimsemelerini ve ortak paydada yaşama bilincine sahip olmalarını beklemektedir. Dewey ile aynı evrensel değerlere sahip olan Tonguç, evrensel değerler ile birlikte insanı sosyo-kültürel bağlamda yakın çevresi ile düşünerek Köy Okulları gibi ilerlemeci eğitim felsefesini benimsemiş bir uygulamayı yaşama geçirmiş ve günümüze değin tartışılagelen örnek bir uygulama sunmuştur.
Education has been a matter of importance throughout human history. In this historical process, many views have emerged about what to be taught and how to be taught to people. In this perspective, we see the foundations of the human nature. The determination of what the human nature is is the element that will also determine the purpose of education. Therefore, in this study, the concept of human nature has held an important place. The focus of the study is to study the reflections on education of John Dewey and Ismail Right Tonguç’s views on human nature, which have seen significant influences on their thoughts and practices and the field of educational sciences during their lifetime. Dewey and Tonguç’s views on human nature and education were compared. This study, conducted with the document review model, took advantage of the works of Dewey and Tonguç and the written works related to them. It draws attention that they adopt a educational philosophy that fits the needs of the time they live and are trying to realize their thoughts through education. In this context, it is believed that the thinkers focus primarily on determining the human nature. This is due to the use of human nature definitions in determining the purposes and methods of education. Dewey and Tonguç, who adopt universal values, expect the individuals who will grow through education to accept these values and have the consciousness of living in common share. Tonguç, which has the same universal values as Dewey, has lived a practice that has adopted the advanced education philosophy, such as the Village Schools, by thinking about man with his close environment in the socio-cultural context, along with the universal values, and has presented an example of the practice that is controversial until today.
The training of people has been a matter of importance throughout the history. There are many opinions about what to teach and how to teach people. According to different approaches, the method is also different as well as the purpose of education. Determining what human nature is the element that determines the purpose of education. It is noteworthy that opinions about human nature are effective in determining the purpose and method of education. Therefore, the concept of "human nature" has an important role in this research. In this study, it was aimed to examine the effects of education on human nature according to the educational philosophical views of John Dewey and İsmail Tonguç who influenced many people with their thoughts and actions from their time until now. In the present study, the thoughts of John Dewey and İsmail Tonguç on human nature were discussed in terms of education. Also, human nature and educational perspectives have been put forth and studied comparatively. These thinkers tried to reach similar aims despite their differences. It is noteworthy that they adopted a philosophy of education according to the needs of their time and they tried to demonstrate their thoughts through education. It is seen that these philosophers prioritize the human nature and emphasize the consideration of human nature in determining the aims and methods of education. Dewey and Tonguç who adopted universal values, expect individuals growing through education to adopting universal values and have a conscience of social life.
