Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil’s first translation activities started in İzmir in 1880’s and also his prose poems, stories and novels have a significant role in developing his writing career as well as the formation of Servet-i Fünun literature. His actual activity in press started in 1886 in İzmir with the newspaper named Hizmet. Sefile, Nemide, Bir Ölünün Defteri and Ferdi ve Şürekası novels; short story book Tuhfe-i Letaif, a novel history Hikâye were first serialized in Hizmet and then published as book. Halit Ziya’s long stories which were published in Hizmet are one of his most important writing activities in this lively publishing term. Halit Ziya has five pieces which was written successively in İzmir and named as “short novel” by him: Bir Muhtıranın Son Yaprakları, Bir İzdivacın Tarih-i Muaşakası, Deli, Bu muydu? and Heyhat. Halit Ziya set the principles of Servet-i Fünun novel and short story with the expression techniques and themes he preffered in his İzmir years and went to İstanbul as a self proven author.
