Assessing The Power of Frontex In Maritime Operations Against Irregular Migrants Under International LawT he proper running of the common market depends on effective external border management of the European Union and the establishment of a security area. With this goal in mind, one of the Union’s agencies, Frontex was established in 2004. The significant increase in the number of arrivals of irregular migrants by sea is trying to be prevented by Frontex sea operations since then. Even though the main aim of those operations is implied to protect the right to life of migrants, the pushback operations of Frontex supports the contrary. States have the sovereign right to determine the entry conditions into its territory in accordance with international law. Whereas, some of the powers given to Frontex relating to irregular migration and smuggling of migrants under the regulation no. 656/2014 seem to be in breach of international law, especially the principle of non-refoulement
