Özet:

Turkey, as an effect of its geographical location and due to the moderate political stance on immigration policy issues, has been a bridge between the developed western countries and the countries that are inadequate in terms of economic conditions and living standards. With this feature, irregular migration affectes Turkey a transit country. With the recent crisis in Syria, Turkey has been exposed by large immigration flows and about 2.8 million Syrians have taken refuge in to Turkey as part of temporary protection. However, Syrians in Turkey attempts to cross to Europe by illegal ways, because of their family unity, the development of social facilities, job opportunities and the level of prosperity. The increasing control over territorial borders of governments and the difficulty of marine patrol activities has led irregular migrants to use seaway to reach country of the destination country. Especially, in addition to the nearness of the Greek islands in Aegean Sea, makes it attractive for immigrants to choose the seaway.The Turkish territorial waters, that are used as an irregular migration route in the transition to European countries, are almost used as a route of hope by thousands of immigrants. Because these transits are made with marine vessels that are inconvenient to sea and are much more loaded than their passenger capacity, they often cause loss of lifes and rescue operations. There are many studies on irregular migrantion and legal status, economic, cultural and political influences of Syrian migrants, but there are not many about the illegal migration which occurs at sea. İn this study, statistical information about irregular migration issued by organizations such as International Organization of Migration, Frontex, Turkish Directorate General of Migration Management,Turkish Parliamentary Investigation Committee, and Turkish Coast Guard is analyzed. The study also aimed to examine the process before and during the passage of irregular migrants illegal migration actions at sea.Additionally the reason why irregular migrants prefer the sea route was examined too
