This study deals with the moon and the sun symbolism in Alawi and Bektashi poetry which contains rich and colorful examples to sufi poetry. The sun, the existence of heaven and the moon in its relevance, stand as two notions in poetic tradition that inspire and encourage human creativity by their multiple connotations. Cosmic assets such as the sun and the moon have always attracted human attention regardless to cultural differences, owing to their power for being unreachable. In this sense, many cultures have a common perspective; however, the interpretations of these assets are directly related to the world of beliefs and thoughts. Alawi-Bektashi tradition, which constitutes a syncretic division of Turkish-Islamic history and literature with its belief and culture system, presents significant material to be examined and analyzed as a mixture of different beliefs and cultures. This study focuses on the moon and the sun symbolism with a special emphasis on religious interpretations of the symbols in poems that provide good examples to Alawi-Bektashi beliefs.
