Violence is described as the incidents that stop individuals’ mental, moral, and physical developments or retard them, that cause physical or psychological traumas and prevent the individual from participating in social life. Violence in education is seen as negative behaviour like physical, psychological and sexual behavior displayed by students against students; by students against teachers or administrators; by nonstudents against students, teachers and administrators; by administrators, teachers and other employees against students. The purpose of this study is to reveal the causes of violence in schools in the context of individual, family, and school. The research is based on descriptive analysis and the data have been collected by using questionnaire forms. The opinions of 100 students on violence in schools who study in the final year of two schools, one of which is private and the other is public in the center of Adıyaman city in the 2018-2019 education year have been received. In the research, a questionnaire form has been used as the data collection tool. The data obtained from the research have been analyzed through percentage calculations by using SPSS 15.0 statistic program. The research has concluded that one out of two students is involved in violence, that the cause of violence mostly stems from the ‘issues about the opposite sex’, that students of private schools generally observe violence from their environments, whereas students of public schools observe it from mass media and school, that most students see violence as a ‘behavior that needs to be avoided’, that they attribute the cause of violence to ‘poor education’, that the root of violence in schools is students, school administrators, and teachers’ attitudes. In this sense, it is recommended that school administrations should conduct research on how the teachers who work in their schools and school administrators describe violence, on what their approaches toward preventing violence are, and on how they will provide education to those who need it.
